Workshop Descriptions

The LBCC Staff Professional Development Program is introducing three new series of workshops to aid in your continued personal and professional growth.


Customer Service Series

This series of workshops focuses on the service component layered into all positions at the college. You will learn about providing good internal customer service to fellow staff members as well as providing good external customer service to students, vendors and campus visitors. Participants will receive a certificate of completion if all workshops are attended.

  • Delivering Excellent Customer Service: September 9, 2009(9:00am-11:00am, LAC-V111)
    This workshop will provide the participant with key skills and attitudes needed to provide quality customer service. Participants identify and define what quality customer service is and discuss the differences between the public and private sector. Topics also include understanding and exceeding customer expectations and learning how to deal with unrealistic expectations. Participants identify and discuss how "red tape" can affect the level of service provided in the public sector and how to focus on what we can do instead of what we can't do when providing quality customer service.
  • Dealing with Difficult People:
    November 4, 2009 (9:00am-11:00am, LAC-V111)
    This workshop examines the situations and behaviors that can lead people to exhibiting "difficult " behavior. It examines how emotional triggers are activated by "difficult" people and how to mitigate the conflict that can accompany difficult behaviors.
  • Working in Teams:
    November 17, 2009 (9:00am-12:00pm, LAC-V111)
    This workshop examines the components of a successful team and discusses team dynamics exhibited by successful, productive teams such as:
    • Building and exhibiting trust
    • Clarifying Goals
    • Using self-assessment
    • Problem Solving
    • Assignment of appropriate, meaningful member roles
    • Effective communication


Equity Awareness Series

This series of workshops is focused on developing the cohesiveness of the LBCC team, fostering respect and inclusion for all employees. Participants will receive a certificate of completion if all three workshops are completed.

  • Safe Zone Workshop:
    September 29, 2009 (1:00pm-5:00pm, LAC-V111)
    The LBCC Safe Zone Workshop's purpose is to promote awareness of and respect for people of all sexual orientations by forming a network of supportive contacts on our campuses. Its goal is to establish a campus-wide network of easily visible allies, (students, faculty and staff), committed and trained to provide safe, nonjudgmental support, information and assistance.
  • AB 1825 Sexual Harassment Prevention Training- Non-Supervisory Classified Personnel:
    October 28, 2009 (8:00am-10:00am, PCC-Dyer Hall)
    This workshop is based on California Law AB 1825, which requires that an employer having 50 or more employees provide effective interactive training and education regarding sexual harassment. By the end of the training session, the staff will be able to:
    • Understand and identify harassing conduct
    • Understand and explain the reporting and complaint process
    • Identify ways to help prevent sexual and other forms of harrassment
  • Valuing Diversity in the Workplace: Understanding Human Relations:
    October 28, 2009 (10:00am-12:00pm, PCC-Dyer Hall)

    This workshop will explore and promote awareness of cultural differences at work, primarily among the staff but also as it impacts students and vendors. It will discuss:
    • The importance of acknowledging, valuing and respecting people's differences
    • The language of exclusion and inclusion
    • Identifying culturally insensitive behavior and how to avoid workplace conflict


Microsoft Technology Series

This series of workshops is focused on the campus-wide transition to Microsoft Office 2007. It will consist of a series of interactive workshops, with you generating the teaching content by providing pre-workshop questions.

AB 1825 Sexual Harasssment Prevention Training

AB 1825 requires that an employer having 50 or more employees provide at least two hours of classroom or other effective interactive training and education regarding sexual harassment to all supervisory employees who are employed as of July 1, 2005 and to all new supervisory employees within six months of their assumption of a supervisory position. By the end of the training session you will be able to:

  • Understand and identify harassing conduct
  • Describe the state and federal laws prohibiting discrimination and sexual harrassment, including AB1825 compliance
  • Understand and explain the reporting and complaint process, and manager/coordinator role
  • Identify ways to help prevent sexual and other forms of harassment, and assisting in the resolution of informal complaints

ADA Workshop
This workshop will cover the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and the regulations concerning full and equal use and access of the goods, services, facilities, or accommodations of public places as well as those specific to the education arena.

Adjunct Faculty
This workshop will unravel the mysteries of this important employment action. The topics that will be discussed include: when and how faculty can acquire tenure, the "60 % rule," and the differences between persons employed before 1967 and after 1967.

Advanced Investigations of Harassment Complaints
This workshop focuses on interviewing techniques, the general background of the laws of harassment and discrimination , how to focus the investigation to prevent a "run away" interview, dealing with a difficult or evasive witness, responding to union representatives or attorneys who insist on controlling the investigation and making factual findings.

AFT Classified Bargaining Agreement
This workshop reviews the important changes to language and important new additions in the 2008/2011 AFT-Classified Bargaining Agreement.

Basic Grammar Review Part I
This workshop reviews the basic principles of grammar. You will learn about using the different parts of speech, using clauses and conjunctions, and how to avoid common problems such as then/than confusion and run-on sentences.

Basic Grammar Review Part II
This workshop focuses on common punctuation usage. You will learn about using common punctuation, such as the period and question but more importantly, how to use colons, semi-colon and commas. The workshop also focuses on how to avoid common problems such as run-on sentences and the dreaded comma splice. Additionally, a review of the basic sentence components from Part I is included.

Business Grammar & Proofreading
Spend three hours and learn easy tricks and tips for remembering grammar basics. Learn up-to-date business courtesy titles, salutations. Learn to proofread like a pro using foolproof and easy to use and remember techniques. And learn how to trim the fat from your writing, waking up your readers by varying sentence patterns, lengths and slashing unnecessary adjectives and adverbs.

Business Writing Skills
Explore the process of prewriting, the "Seven C's" of letter writing, and the importance of revising your writing. You will also learn how to determine the best method of communication, conversational versus professional language, the most common writing mistakes, and methods for eliminating wordiness.

California Code of Regulations: Education Code and Title V
This workshop will be a look at some of the most common and not-so-common section/topics of the Education Code and Title V of the California Code of regulations which present daily challenges for managers, supervisors and HR professional of community colleges. Topics include the tenure review process, classified employee probationary periods, administrator contracts, the Title V process for responding to a discrimination complaint, classified and academic leaves of absence provisions, the 67% law, Title V issues concerning recruitment, records retention, proper use of short term substitute and limited term classified employees, benefits of part-time employees, proper use of criminal records, and student records.

Communication
This course is designed to introduce participants to key elements in communication. Topics will include verbal and nonverbal communication as well as listening skills. Barriers to effective communication will be explored and telephone and email communication will be discussed.

Community Emergency Reponse Team (CERT) Training
LBCC Risk Services will be hosting the Long Beach Fire Department Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training course. Long Beach CERT provides the training, as required by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), to support the skills & knowledge needed to assist neighbors, co-workers and professional rescue personnel when a major disaster does strike.

Conflict Management
This workshop is designed to introduce participants to the meaning of conflict, the causes of conflict, and strategies for resolving interpersonal conflict as well as dealing with difficult customers.

Coping with the Stress of Change
Stress associated with change can be both good and bad, depending on personal perceptions. Surprisingly, even position changes in life, such as marriage or a new job or promotion, can contribute to high levels of stress due to the multiple adjustments to the new event that are required. This program explores typical responses people demonstrate when change happens, such as resistance to change, stress reactions to change, and creating opportunities from the change process.

Creating a Culture of Respect
This workshop addresses some of the issues surrounding diversity and its impact on the workplace. The session will cover subjects including confronting prejudice, managing differences and understanding the power of diversity. The workshop does not address statutory requirements of hiring a diverse workforce.

Creating a Positive Work Environment
A positive outlook can greatly enhance personal success, health and well-being. Negative self-talk and personal beliefs can hinder the process toward, and results of, reaching personal and professional goals. This workshop examines the physical, psychological and interpersonal effects of both negative and positive attitudes.

Creating Work-Life Balance
The conflicting demands of work and home can create stress and zap the time and energy needed to get everything done. In this workshop, participants will find answers that will allow them to be more effective and more satisfied with both their home and work lives. Competing demands will be identified, and an assessment of central life goals will contribute to an understanding of how to achieve improved work/life balance.

Current Developments in Workers' Compensation
This workshop is designed to give supervisors and managers the knowledge necessary to deal with the issues surrounding disability and workers' compensation. This workshop will familiarize you with the latest workers' compensation laws and rulings.

This course is designed to introduce the participant to decision-making and problem solving. Emphasis will be placed on decision making and problem solving techniques and steps in the decision making process and will include understanding the role of decision makers, differentiating between the types of decisions to be made, and learning the steps in the decision making process.

Designing an Assessment Project: From Start to Finish
Before conducting any assessment project, it is important to plan with purpose. This webinar is designed to help student affairs professionals understand the full cycle of assessment practice from start to finish. Within this topic, we will highlight the significance of beginning assessment projects with the end in mind to achieve better results and more useable data. At the conclusion of this webinar, you will be able to use this information to begin or improve both individual projects and unit assessment plans.

Disability Discrimination Update: State Law (FEHA) vs. Federal Law (ADA)
This workshop will discuss both the similarities and the differences between the FEHA and the ADA and will provide the participants with the necessary tools and information to reduce and/or minimize disability discrimination claims against your organization.

The Disability Interactive Process
This workshop covers the interactive process, start to finish, including will be starting the interactive discussion, reasonable accommodation and light duty assignments.

Diversity: A Workplace Asset
Every member of the workforce brings unique skills, background and experience vital to the successful completion of company productivity and service goals. This program discusses the value each person contributes to the whole, as well as the strengths of our diversity. Participants will learn about the value of clear communication, overcoming stereotypes and appreciating the unique differences people bring to the workplace.

Emergency Preparedness Training
LBCC Risk Services will be presenting Emergency Preparedness training courses including ICS 100 and ICS 700 in one-day workshops. This is the first step you can take in becoming active in our District-wide preparations. The training will consist of the following:

  • ICS-100 Introduction to Incident Command System (ICS), which provides a basic understanding of the incident command system (ICS) and describes the history, features, principles, and organizational structure of the ICS. It also explains the relationship between ICS and the national incident management system (NIMS)
  • ICS-700 National Incident Management System (NIMS), which provides a consistent nationwide template to enable all government, private sector, and nongovernmental organizations to work together during domestic incidents. Additional information is available at http://www.fema.gov/nims/

Employee Assistance Program (EAP) Orientation
During this presentation, participants learn about the kinds of counseling and other assistance available through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP). This presentation also includes a video that shows the many ways MHN EAP can help.

Employee Due Process Rights and 'Skelly': A Guide to Implementing Public Employee Discipline
This workshop addresses the steps that must be taken to ensure due process in disciplining staff. Topics include the structure and language of a proper Skelly notice as well as the Skelly process.

Ethical Leadership Workshop
Dr. Jerry Hunter, Retired Chancellor, Fullerton College, will speak on ethical leadership in the Community College arena.

Exercising Your Management Rights
This workshop offers an introductory overview identifying the rights of supervisors and managers, which shows how to exercise them in a way that can improve their management skills.

The Extreme Employee: Dealing with and Documenting Problem Employees
This workshop deals with the issues faced when employee behavior falls short of expectations. Issues such as tardiness, inappropriate dress, conflict between co-workers, as well as more serious issues are addressed.

Faculty SERP Orientation
The Long Beach Community College District has announced that the Board of Trustees has approved the offering of a Supplemental Employee Retirement Plan (SERP). This program will provide eligible employees with a monthly income supplement to their regular STRS or PERS retirement benefits or other retirement income. Keenan Financial Services will facilitate these group orientation meetings designed to provide an overview of the Plan and to answer your questions.

Fitness and Your Brain: Avoiding Dementia
Dementia refers to a group of mental conditions that interfere with a person's ability to think clearly, make decisions and carry out the activities of daily living. Dementia will become more prevalent as our elderly population increases. This workshop discusses ways to prevent or forestall the onset of dementia.

Fraud Prevention Workshop
This workshop will explain what fraud is and some of the methods available for preventing and detecting fraud. Information about reporting suspected fraud and the new LBCCD Fraud Hotline will also be included.

"From Boots to Books" - Serving Veterans at LBCC
It is estimated that as many as 40% of the veterans returning from the Gulf War, the Iraq War and from Afghanistan will be returning with a disability. This workshop will address some of the disability issues and challenges veterans face, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, concussive brain injuries, loss of limbs, sexual trauma, etc. as well as describe the services available for our returning veterans both in the Disabled Student Programs and Services and in the Veterans Affairs Office. A panel of Long Beach City College veterans will describe their personal experiences in making the transition to college.

Going Outside the Classified Service: Short Term Employees, Substitutes and Professional Experts
This workshop will address relevant education code provisions and legal interpretations with respect to short term employees, including, part-time and substitute employees. This workshop will also cover the requirements of A.B. 500.

Heart Health
Coronary Heart disease (CHD) is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. CHD is caused by narrowing of the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart, and often results in a heart attack. Fortunately, everyone can take steps tot protect their heart and their life-or someone else's. This workshop will focus on preventing and treating CHD.

Hiring the EEO Way
This interactive session meets the requirements of the EEO plan, requiring all members of a district screening and/or selection committee to receive training in Title V equal employment opportunity requirements. It also includes discussion on state and federal discrimination laws.

This workshop provides an overview of issues facing CCD HR staff including labor recruitment, categories of employees, and key education code provisions.

Human Resources Academy II
This workshop focuses on advanced issues that experiences HR staff must face including key education code provisions, 67% rule compliance, fitness for duty, 39 month reemployment and more. Participants should be encouraged to bring their tough HR questions to the workshop.

Humor for the Health of It
Humor is an essential part of life, and it contributes to remaining healthy and positive and effectively handling life's upsets and setbacks. This workshop describes why humor is healthy, both emotionally and physically. It explores way to cultivate and find humor in everyday life.

LBCC/AFT Union Joint Presentation: LBCC Labor Relations Workshop
Presented jointly by the AFT Union Staff and LBCCD HR Administration, this workshop is geared to fostering the understanding and practical implementation of the LBCC working environment as defined in the AFT contract.

Legally Compliant Strategies for Diversity Enhancement
This workshop briefly reviews the applicable law and clarifies the new terminology of EEO and diversity hiring. It then explores strategies that are both legally complaint and designed to diversify. The workshop also provides a much-needed opportunity for colleagues to share what they are doing on their own campuses.

Managing Stress
Stress seems to be a constant companion in today's busy world. However, frequent or cumulative stress erodes emotional and physical health. This workshop emphasizes that managing stress begins with the assumption of personal responsibility and self-control across different situations and environments. The ability to choose healthy responses to any given event is the key to minimizing and creating a healthy life.

Measuring Learning Outcomes
The purpose of this webinar is to discuss specific strategies for assessing existing learning outcomes. We will discuss various methods and measures for learning outcomes assessment, as well as the ways by which results can be reported and how to set "success" criteria. PeopleSoft Tips
This practical workshop, designed for beginning to intermediate PeopleSoft users, will provide helpful tips on navigating, accessing, and understanding the information available via the PeopleSoft system. Learn easy tips to help you perform your job more easily and with increased accuracy. We will specifically cover changes that have occurred as a result of the 8.9 upgrade from the HR, Payroll and TARS perspective.

Performance Management: Evaluation, Documentation and Discipline
This workshop takes the supervisor and manager through each step of performance management. From objectively evaluating performance, documenting performance issues and, if necessary, discipline.

This workshop discusses the legal aspects of potential retaliation claims under federal and state law, the sources of retaliation claims and what constitutes "protected activity", which can give rise to a retaliation claim.Constitutional issues such as freedom of speech and association will also be covered.
